Hum Hindustani

It was with Hum Hindustani that RG established himself as a dramatist .It was lauded a 'brilliant' ,'sparkling' and 'refreshing' comedy ; Hindustan Times ( 7 February 1954) called it 'a thought provoking social drama ... excellent fare for anyone who cares for good, courageous and purposeful theatre'. Hum Hindustani was perhaps the first amateur drama to become what may be called a box-office hit: there were multiple repeat performances , which was unusual in Delhi and its success was taken as 'a very encouraging sign of the revival of the city's cultural life '.

Shankar's Weekly wrote of the story being 'quietly tackled with a wealth of wisdom and affectionate humour by a playwright who has.. found a subject which amateur actors can act , and both highbrows and lowbrows can appreciate ' and remarked that the big lesson to amateur theatre in Delhi was - ' that there is exciting drama in real life right here in India, in the life of ordinary people'.
