The story of Chitralekha is too well known to need narration . This immortal classic of Shree Bhagwati Charan Verma was adapted into a play by Shree RG Anand in 1959 and staged by Indraprastha Theatres in October of that year , at Fine Arts Theatre, New Delhi. It's lyrics were composed by Harivansh Rai Bachchan ,Music by Surinder Soni ,choreography by Panna Lall, Costumes by Satish Gujral , Hair styling by Kiran Gujral and Lighting by MS Satyu .
The play was specially abridged for presentation at the 75th Birth Anniversary of Shree Verma on 29 th August 1978. While re writing the play Mr Anand took care to preserve a faithful likeness to the original classic and also keep it stage worthy. The truncated version with a new cast and new sets were prepared in just ten days .
